Preparing to Grow Forsythia

Forsythia is most often grown from young established plants rather than seeds. Before planting, find a location, which offers full or partial sunlight and well draining soil. While mature forsythia is most forgiving of varying soil conditions, growing forsythia can benefit from enriched soil. Before planting, thoroughly rake through and work the soil, breaking up clumps and removing rocks, and working in manure, peat moss or organic matter into the soil to enrich it.

Growing and Caring for Forsythia

Forsythia will not need much fertilization, although mulching can assist with reducing invasion by weeds or pests. Water forsythia as needed but do not allow the plant to receive too much water, as this will cause the potential for decay and soft wood growth. Forsythia is fast growing and will likely need pruning the moment the bloom season finishes. Forsythia is very forgiving and can tolerate extensive pruning well, even if it is cut back all the way to the ground level. Pruning will encourage forsythia to grow even more vigorously. Since forsythia can grow wide and wild, shaping is often necessary when using forsythia in a controlled landscape design.
