Hosting a Shrek themed party for your son or daughter is a great way to celebrate with the classic kids' character. You can bring the grouchy green ogre into your own home with just a few steps, like planning invitations, decorations, games, food, and party favors.
The first step to any party is the invites. You can go to your local party store and check to see if they have Shrek party invitations. Another option is to order your Shrek invites online. You can order invitations where you hand write in the party details or order personalized invites and have the company professional print the party details on the invite.
Buy Shrek table clothes, paper plates, cups, napkins and balloons. If you can’t find Shrek balloons another option is green helium balloons and or green streamers. Make a sign for the front door that says, “Welcome to the Land of Far, Far Away.” Gather all of your child’s Shrek toys and use them as table decorations.
There are many fun games to play at a Shrek party. Get an apple and use that to play hot potato. Print out Shrek coloring pages and have the kids color them in using markers or crayons. Have a dragon egg hunt by hiding plastic eggs with prizes in them in your backyard and send the kids outside to find them. Buy green nail polish and paint all of the girls’ nails. Have the kids make their own swap slime. Pin the tail on the donkey is also a perfect fit for the theme.
There are plenty of fun Shrek themed food ideas to have at your party. Serve celery sticks filled with peanut butter topped with raisins and call them bugs on a log (if any of the kids attending have a nut allergy use cream cheese as an alternative to peanut butter). Have swamp chips and dip by adding green food coloring to your ranch dressing. Put juice into a punch bowl and add frozen jelly worms and call it bug juice. Kids love the idea of eating worms and dirt. For this dessert get clear plastic cups and put chocolate pudding in them topped with Oreo crumbs and stick gummy worms in it (serve this with spoons). Another idea is to make green Jell-O and serve it as slime. If you are a baker, you can make your own Shrek themed cake or cupcakes. If you are not that creative or just do not have the time, most bakeries will be able to make Shrek themed desserts for you. Another fun idea is to get a picture of your child dressed up in a Shrek costume and have a bakery put the photo of your child on the cake. As a side note, if this party is for your one year old child’s first birthday it is common now to get a separate mini cake for your one year old to eat and get messy with.
You can bake or buy gingerbread cookies and have each child at the party decorate them at the party with frosting, sprinkles and gum drops and have them bring them home as their favors. Some other party favors are Shrek stickers, rubber bugs, Shrek tattoos or Shrek t-shirts.
