How to Keep Wearing Your Favorite Spring Fashions for Fall 2011

By Ashley Berg , last updated January 9, 2012

With autumn approaching, most girls are scrambling to get the most out of their spring wardrobes while the weather is still tolerant to the practice. But even when temperatures start dropping there are a number of tricks, fixes, and creative solutions to extending the wearability of your favorite spring fashions well into the fall of 2011. If you are feeling the chill but are loath to part with your mini skirts and booty shorts, here are some ideas to navigate the interim between seasons.

Skirts, dresses, crop tops, and shoes present unique challenges to the fashionably sensitive when fall begins to creep in, but it is a challenge worth taking up. Here are some tips on how to keep wearing your favorite spring fashions in fall 2011 without looking behind the times or freezing your chic tushy off.

The Romper

Rompers or jumpsuits are absolutely everywhere. Every girl has to have the easy to wear and versatile look for weekends shopping, walking along the beach, and hitting up casual mid-summer parties. But how can you wear this comfortable and stylish look in fall when temps drop and rain threatens bare skin? It is all about adding layers. Think of the romper as the final piece, and start from the ground up. Leggings are a girl’s best friend. Wear them under the jumpsuit to protect legs from the elements while adding color and sophistication to the laid-back look. Throw on a cropped jacket and heeled booties and prepare to take on the town.

The Tunic Dress

Another great staple of the warm weather months, the tunic dress could be belted for a chic hourglass-enhancing silhouette, left to hang freely for a bohemian riff on a modern look, or worn with jeggings for a hip and trendy combo. There is no need to tuck away the tunic dress for fall and winter, though. This practical garment has lasting power all year through. To get the look, throw on a pair of patterned leggings underneath a solid neutral tunic dress and wrap yourself up in an oversized dolman-sleeved hooded sweater. Or, in another twist, layer a long-sleeved tee or body suit under the tunic dress, belt it, and sport knee-high or thigh-high brightly colored socks and rock your best high-shafted boots.

The Maxi Skirt

The maxi skirt has to be one of the best looks of the summer this year. Flattering, romantic, and universally wearable, the maxi skirt can be dressed up or down and worn for just about any occasion. Fortunately, the length of the skirt makes it very easy to update for chillier climes. Really, all there is to carrying this style over to fall is using warmer accompanying apparel. Swap out the Grecian inspired sandals for sturdy boots under that bohemian maxi skirt. Top with a plush heavy gauge knit chunky sweater with a cowl-neck and you are ready for your fireside chat. You can also try wearing a body-conscious slim long-sleeved tee and adding a wide belt at the waist for a sleek and chic style.
