The importance of maintaining your physical health is growing greater as our country is currently facing a very desperate problem that is plaguing everyone from young children to senior citizens. Americans are becoming increasingly out of shape and falling dangerously behind when it comes to maintaining their physical health. Whether you have never exercised a day in your life or you are just looking to get back into the routine, there are a few simple things to consider when looking to maintain and improve your physical health, including sleeping habits, nutrition, and physical activity.

Consult Your Doctor
 
It is always a good idea to consult with your doctor before beginning any kind of diet and physical activity routines. You may want to have some simple tests done to measure your heart rate, cholesterol levels, and blood pressure among other things, just to be safe and aware of your body’s fitness levels.
 
Healthy Sleeping Habits
 
Maintaining your physical health requires energy and having ample amounts of energy requires adequate sleep. It is a good idea to develop sound sleeping habits to maximize your energy and to remain healthy, both physically and mentally. Good rest is the building block for a successful daily routine that will help you maintain your physical health. Shoot for eight to ten hours a night depending on your age and schedule. Get into a sleeping schedule to help you go to sleep at a certain time each night and wake up at the same time every morning.
 
Nutrition
 
Next, consider your diet. Take a look at your current diet to see where you have room for improvement. The food you eat and the liquids you drink fuel your body. Greasy fatty foods and sugary drinks will only slow you down and deteriorate your health. Be sure to construct a balanced diet consisting of lean meats and protein, fruits and vegetables, and plenty of water.
 
There are many diet analysis sites on the web, or you can work with a nutrition counselor or personal trainer at your local fitness center. It is a good idea to pay attention to the food that you consume each day, because it has a direct effect on how you feel and your overall health.
 
Physical Activity
 
The third component to maintaining physical health is of course physical activity. Although many people have busy and hectic lives, scheduling time to exercise is not as hard as it may seem. Strive for fifteen to thirty minutes of light to moderate activity each day or thirty minutes of intense activity three to four times a week. It is a small time commitment and the benefits are immense.
 
Be sure to pick something you enjoy to maintain your motivation. Lifting weights and running sprints and miles are not the only ways to exercise. Bike riding, sports like soccer, hiking, rock climbing, and many others are fun and extremely beneficial ways to get exercise.
 
No matter how you go about designing your routine to maintain physical health, be sure to strive for a balanced lifestyle. Make sure you get the proper amount of rest each night, eat the proper foods each day, and get out and do something!
