How to Make a Boys' Pilgrim Costume

By Amy Freeman , last updated August 7, 2011

A homemade boy's pilgrim costume can provide you with a simple, last minute Halloween costume. The basis of the costume is a pair of black pants and a long-sleeved black shirt, so you will not have sew an outfit. Use a pre-made black top hat as the Pilgrim hat to make preparing the costume even easier.

To make a boy's pilgrim costume, you'll need measuring tape and a yard of white fabric, such as woven cotton or white felt. You'll also need sharp scissors and a marker as well as a 2-inch wide black belt, white glue, hook and loop closure, and a piece of gold paper. Add the finishing touches to the costume with a pair of white tube socks, a black sweat suit and a plastic top hat.

You won't need more than an afternoon to make the costume. Measure across the boy's shoulders, then draw a circle on the white fabric, the diameter of which should equal the shoulder measurement. Also measure the size of his neck and draw another circle in the center of the first that equals the neck measurement. Cut out the circles with the scissors, and then cut a vertical line from the inner circle to the edge.  Cut a 1-inch piece of hook and loop closure and attach the sides of the closure to the top corner of the cut edge of the circle.

Cut two strips of fabric that measure 7 inches by 8 inches. These will be the cuffs of the pilgrim's costume. Attach hook and loop closure to the edge of the strips and set aside.

Make the buckle for the belt and the hat by cutting two rectangles from the gold paper. Cut a rectangle out of the center too, and then glue one buckle to the middle of the belt. Cut a 2-inch wide strip of white fabric that's long enough to wrap around the hat. Glue the second gold buckle to the center front of the white strip, the wrap around the hat and glue in place.

Put the sweat suit on; pull the socks over the bottom hem of the pants, covering his calves. Wrap the belt around his waist and the cuffs around his wrists, then drape the large white circle over his shoulders.
