How to Make a Hippie Halloween Costume

By Eli Kooris , last updated August 7, 2011

There are a number of inventive ways to make a hippie costume for your halloween party so you'll be, like, totally believable, man. This can be done cheaply, in the true hippie tradition of living frugally, or it can be put together with exact hippie items from the stereotypical hippies who made news in the late 20th Century. It will also depend on if you are a man or a woman for the items you buy for your hippie Halloween costume. Check out a few of the suggestions below for how to make a hippie Halloween costume.

Long Hair

Long hair is necessary for just about any hippie Halloween costume, as hippies believe in not cutting their hair and thus, not fitting in with the establishment. So this means if you're a woman, having long hair is better for this costume, though you can still usually pull off the costume with short hair (as long as you put a lot of flowers in it). If you're a man, you will definitely need long hair and if you don't already have it, you should buy a wig. The longer the hair on the wig the better, though the more involved the wig is, the more expensive it will be to purchase.

Facial Hair

This is obviously an addition for men only (unless a woman wants to wear fake facial hair and go as a male hippie, which may be a brilliant, counter-intuitive costume). Men who are going as hippies for Halloween should grow as thick and mangy of a beard as possible to really pull off this look. Or shave the beard into an outrageous moustache and sideburns, making you look somewhere between a hippie and a biker.

Tie Dye

Tie dye is a staple look for hippie Halloween costumes for both men and women, as this colorful style represented unity among the hippie community, or perhaps just the residual of a large amount of drug use. Men can wear tie dyed t-shirts for a more casual hippie Halloween costume which are brightly colored and look like a spiritual light is somewhere in the middle of your chest. Dress shirts can also be tie dyed as well, making you look like a slightly more respectable hippie. Women's dresses can also be tie dyed, allowing this tie dyed look to actually take on a degree of real sex appeal, as opposed to being synonymous with a hippie guy with bad body odor.

Bell Bottoms

These flowing, loose-fitting pants were also synonymous with the hippie look and style and can be worn by either men or women who are embodying the hippie costume on Halloween. Bell Bottoms can be made of a number of different materials but are usually jeans which bloom out at the bottom over the shoes, creating a bell shape and the name they are so well known for. If you are going to wear these pants, be sure to wear shoes which will lift you a little higher off the ground so that they are not dragging behind you the whole time, collecting dirt and making you look even more like a hippie than you already do.
