How to Make a Stork Centerpiece for a Baby Shower

By Penelope Lin , last updated August 5, 2011

Having a baby is always an experience steeped in not only excitement, but also nervousness and even fear.  A fun, lighthearted baby shower is the perfect way to comfort, or at least distract, your expecting friend.  And, what's a baby shower without a silly stork centerpiece to start the party off with a laugh?  Here's how to make a stork centerpiece out of a 5-foot boat, in just six easy steps.

The materials needed for the centerpiece should be available at any arts and crafts store.  Pick up 2 Styrofoam balls (6"-diamter), 1 Styrofoam cone (8"-long), 2 silver-painted bamboo sticks (3'-long, 1/2"-diameter), 1 bamboo stick (2'-long, 1/2"-diameter), 1 wooden dowel (8"-long), 2 empty soup cans, 6-8 feather boas, greening pins, 3 silver craft foam sheets, 2 goodly eyes, 3D super-strength glue dots, double stick tape, 1 tiara, and white ribbon.

To start from the bottom up, insert the 2 silver bamboo sticks as the stork's legs into a Styrofoam ball, which is the stork's body.  Next, make the stork's neck by sticking the bamboo stick into the top of the Styrofoam ball body.  For the stork's head, stick the other Styrofoam body on top of the bamboo stick.  Then, push one end of the 8"-long dowel into the base of the cone and the other end into the ball body to create the stork's tail.  Put each silver leg into a can and wrap the foam sheet around each to create the stork's feet.  If the foam sheet does not come with adhesive backing, use glue dots on the corners or hot glue to glue them down neatly.  Make sure the stork can stand sturdily as you wrap the soup cans and legs.  Starting from the end of the cone tail, wrap boas around the body, dowel neck, and head, then secure them with pins.  Wrap the last foam sheet into a cone, trim the cone opening to make it level, and pin the cone onto the stork's head as the beak.  For the eyes, stick each googly to the flat of a greening pin with a glue dot and insert them into the stork's head.  Cut out eyelashes or eyebrows from the excess foam sheet pieces and apply them to the head with tape.  Place the tiara on the stork's head, and finish the centerpiece off by tying a white bow around the stork's neck.  Position the stork on the table, surrounded by cupcakes and other crave-satisfying treats, and you're ready to get this shower started!
