How to Prevent Frizz in the Winter

While you are most likely familiar with preventing the summer hazards of frizzy hair due to humidity and heat, you may not be as well-versed in how to prevent frizzy hair from occurring in the winter. Learning how to prevent frizz in the winter starts with understanding the causes of winter frizz. With the cold, damp winter conditions, your hair is more prone to drying out and developing static cling, especially when you use drying products and heat-based styling tools. In addition to these exacerbating conditions, use of chemical treatments and products can also make winter frizz much worse.

If you want to know how to prevent frizz in the winter, the first steps involve following the same regime you follow to prevent summer frizz. First, try to refrain from blow drying and unprotected heat-based styling whenever possible. You should also treat your hair regularly to deep conditioning and hot oil masques to add back moisture. This becomes even more important in the winter when your hair is more dry than ever due to the use of heat and the lower humidity content in the air.

Another great tip for how to prevent frizz in the winter is to take a sheet of fabric softener and simply rub it lightly over the top and ends of your hair. The fabric softener will do the same for your hair as it does for your socks, prevent frizz and static cling. Brushing your hair less often and using a brush with natural bristles or substituting a wide tooth comb can also help ease winter frizz. Additionally, washing your hair less often will allow more moisture to nourish your hair between washings, and using deep conditioning treatments or hot oil masques twice as frequently as you do in warmer months can assist as well.
