How to Rock a Sundress

By Becca McArthur , last updated December 22, 2011

The sundress is the most epically chic dress of all time, and deciding what to wear with one can be just as much fun as the wearing itself! Whether you are going for a look that is casual-yet-romantic, carelessly bohemian, or no-frills vintage, the sundress—and the accessories you add to it—will be your perfect go-to piece.

Sundresses are great for wearing on date nights or daytime adventures, and you can accessorize easily based on your activity. If you are out with friends, doing lots of walking, or walking the halls at school, keep your sundress casual with a pair of flat, knotted sandals (Frye’s Huarache or Delphine varieties make your look totally effortless), and some wooden or printed bangles and simple earrings. For date night, add a simple pair of espadrilles or wedge heels for a look that is flirty but relaxed. If you will be somewhere air-conditioned, grab an oversized cardigan in a subtle color (or something bright if your sundress is more neutral) to throw over your shoulders.

When it comes to bags, one-strap shoulder sacs look great when paired with sundresses. Since you are not wearing pants and a top, the strap will not ruin the line of your outfit, and the easy style of the sac will match the breeziness of your sundress. However, if you are looking to glam up your sundress for a nighttime party, adding a sleek clutch can make all the difference. Clare Vivier’s Foldover Clutch, for example, in a hue like shimmery gold or royal blue, can add instant glam to any sundress, especially with a pair of killer pumps. Finally, keep your make-up subtle and sweet when wearing a sundress. Just enough mascara, a dusting of gold or silver on your eyelids, and a sweep of rose or bright pink blush on your cheekbones will let your dress take center stage.
