Finding the perfect way to celebrate a child's birthday can be tough but throwing a fun railroad themed party for kids is sure to be a hit. To make the event a success, you should make sure that each element of the party ties in closely to the theme, from the decorations and party favors to the cake.
Set the stage for the party from the very beginning. Instead of a plain invitation, provide each guest with a boarding ticket featuring the departure time and station in place of the party time and location. Encourage guests to dress up as train conductors or railroad workers. Overalls and bandanas are the perfect choice.
Welcome everyone to your home by using sidewalk chalk to draw railroad tracks on the path leading up to your home. Continue the theme inside with red, yellow and blue balloons and streamers and make your own railroad themed signs with slogans like, "Men At Work" or "Railroad Crossing." To make sure everyone is in the party spirit, provide railroad themed favors as party-goers arrive. Fill brown paper bags with various train and railroad related items, such as a whistle, striped engineer hat, railroad coloring book and train cookie cutter.
Make sure all the goodies you serve also tie into the theme. Consider baking train shaped cookies or decorating a large cake to look like a railroad crossing or train tracks. Another simpler cake design is to decorate a large sheet cake with various toy trains, using black licorice to create the railroad tracks. Keep kids entertained with railroad themed games and activities.
Children will love the chance to take a swing at a train-shaped piñata. For a new spin on the traditional game of pin the tail on the donkey, create your own cardboard cutouts and switch the game to pin the caboose on the train.
Whatever activity you choose, just make sure it's railroad related and easy enough that all the children can be involved.
