How to Update a Fireplace

A fireplace is a wonderful, warm addition to any home but even this classic feature needs and update from time to time. Luckily, there are many relatively simple ways to update a fireplace that can have a big impact on your room.

One of the easiest ways to change up the look of a brick fireplace is to paint it. You can paint it a solid color or there are many faux finish kits available specifically for fireplaces. If you're only painting because your fireplace looks dirty, however, you can likely restore your fireplace to its original grandeur with a thorough cleaning.

Another way to update the look of a fireplace is to add a new mantle or bulk up the current one. Mantles help draw the eye to the fireplace, making it even more of a feature in your room, and they come in a variety of styles. Make sure the mantle you choose matches your fireplace and the rest of your room's style. A large, white mantle with elegant scrollwork may fit well in a period home but would look out of place in a sleek, modern space.

Some fireplaces seem outdated simply because of their tile surround. Instead of ripping out your entire fireplace, try switching out your current tile for something more modern. Small glass tiles are popular and can add a bit of shine to your room and stone is always a good choice as well.

For something a little out of the box, consider using vertical or horizontal wood planks to highlight the area surrounding your fireplace. Remove your current mantle and use reclaimed wood to create a one of a kind fireplace. Another option, although it requires a great deal more work, is to add stacked stone around your fireplace. This update can get pricey, however, since it typically requires professional installation.
