How to Use a Wide Barrel Curling Iron

Learning to use a wide barrel curling iron is a great addition to your beauty skill arsenal. Wide barrel curling irons are typically 1 ½ to 2” in diameter and are ideal for creating beachy, wavy hair.

To create a style that will look great and stay all day start with towel dried hair. Flip your hair upside down and apply a dollop of volumizing mousse throughout your hair, especially at your roots. In addition, use a heat protectant in the form of a spray or serum to minimize the damage done to your hair. Next, completely blow dry your hair evenly to prevent burning your hair with the curling iron.

Divide your completely dry into four equal quadrants. To do this, part your hair down the middle then divide those sections into two halves right above your ears. Secure each section with a hair tie or clip. Starting with one of the two bottom sections you should divide the hair into even smaller pieces that should be inch squares. To get looser waves, use larger sections. Each of these chunks will be an individual curl or wave but at the end they will all blend together.

Take the first chunk of hair and starting the tips tightly wrap it around the barrel of the iron away from your face. In order to protect your hair coil you’re the strands around the entire length of the barrel as opposed to wrapping your hair over itself in the same area which will cause the ends of your hair (the part that is directly touching the barrel) to fry while you’re waiting for the rest to get heated and curl properly. Hold the iron in place for 30 seconds and gently pull it out of your hair. Immediately after you finish one of the four quadrants set the style with hair spray. Using a wide barrel curling iron is simple and the waves they create are perfect for summer.
