How to Wear Bangs

By Jane Miller , last updated December 22, 2011

Bangs can give you a dramatically different look, especially if you’ve never had them before. If your eyes are one of your best features, they are a great choice because they highlight your eyes.

The main consideration for how to wear your bangs is face shape. If you have an oval face, you can generally get away with any bang shape such as intense blunt bangs. If you have a round face shape, you might want to consider bangs that are layered around your face, hugging your cheeks. Square face shapes do best with side swept bangs.

Keep in mind the natural texture of your hair when deciding how to wear your bangs. If you have wavy hair, you might opt for a more layered bang. Women with curlier hair have a harder time with bangs, and many choose to flat iron their bangs, if they get them at all. Even women with wavy hair often flat iron their bangs because sometimes a natural part can make the bangs not hang straight down. Also, if you have thinner hair, feathered or wispy bangs are not a good option, and will draw attention to thinning hair.

Also consider the size of your forehead when deciding what kind of bangs to get. If you have a small forehead, you want bangs that start deep into the hairline, possibly around 4-5 inches. This way your face looks more proportional. If you have a medium forehead, you can do just about any bang style. With a large forehead, a side swept bang is best.

Bangs can be a great new style, but definitely a major change if you’re new to having them. If you want to ease your way into bangs less dramatically, side swept bangs open up the face and provide softness and are a good first step.
