How to Wear a Cropped Shirt

The return of the crop top marks another retro fashion throwback that has made its way back onto the runway. The whimsical and fun nature of the crop top can sometimes be overshadowed by a complete dislike or fear of this trend. The dislike stems from the belief that bearing one’s midsection is trashy whereas the fear comes from not thinking you can pull it off.

Correcting these two beliefs will happen when you think of crop tops along with more tasteful attire. Crop tops don’t need to be worn with the acid wash jeans that you remember from the 80’s. Keep it classy and experiment with different ways to keep your navel covered if you feel a little insecure. This can include wearing high waisted jeans and skirts or layering the top over a dress. Slim fitting high waisted pencil skirts will offset the looseness of the shirt.

Another thing to think about is where it is appropriate to wear this kind of top. While the mall, the movies, the beach or pool are all acceptable, it is important to know that the workplace will probably never welcome the crop top. Unless you plan on completely covering your midriff with a high waisted skirt or slacks, reserve this shirt for the weekends.

There are also different types of crop tops that compliment different outfits. Boxy crop tops, like the one offered by American Apparel, are typically made out of thinner material that will drape on your body better and work well if you want to tuck it in. Other crop tops are looser and larger and will fall off of one shoulder. These are perfect to wear with cutoff shorts or without shorts and over a swimsuit. Crop tops are flattering and can work with everybody type so be brave and find the best look for you!
