How to Wear Flat Platforms This Summer

By Kyera Giannini , last updated May 22, 2011

A fresh new trend on the runways this spring, the flat platform shoe is essentially a flat shoe uniformly raised up a few inches (or more). They are fashion’s new shoe fetish and can be worn in a myriad of ways this summer.

During the Day

Wear the flat platform in the same manner you would a normal sandal or a wedge heel. Go for a lower heel during the day, as it can be difficult to move in once you reach the 3-inch mark. Pick one with an easy slip on-slip off design, like one large strap over the toes, and you are good to go. For a summery, beachy feel that looks trendy with a cover-up choose a raffia heel. The more bohemian designs also look great with billowy knee-length and ankle-length skirts, or pair with a jean skirt or shorts for a hip style. The shoes come in all sorts of fun colors for the summer; so pick something in turquoise or a coral red to brighten up your outfit. Buy it in black or white to have a staple shoe that can come out every year.

During the Night

When you are dressing for dinner or a night out on the town, try a pair of flat platforms that are strappy or have a metallic sheen to add punch to the outfit. Or, if you are going to a more conservative occasion, opt for the classic black or white to tone down the height of the heel. You can go as high as you like with the heel when going out, so long as you are not going to be walking for long periods of time. Some of the platforms come with a slightly curved wooden base, which is very attractive when paired with a dress or skirt. An ankle strap can help lengthen the leg and give the impression of the raised heel.

Pick up a pair of flat platforms this summer and view the world from new heights.
