How to Wear a Long Maxi Skirt

By Holly Schoch , last updated July 1, 2011

Although maxi dresses and skirts have become increasingly popular, that doesn't mean that they can be thrown on and expected to look good, this is especially true with maxi skirts, which come dangerously close to resembling an article of clothing stolen out of Grandma's closet if it isn't worn properly. Maxi skirts are a relatively new fashion trend and one that is becoming popular while miniskirts and shorts are still hot on the scene, which means you will have some people who love the look and others who think it provides just a little too much coverage. Now, that shouldn't scare you away from trying to master the maxi skirt look, in fact, it is relatively easy. However, a few pointers could help the adoption of this look go a little smoother.

Maxi skirts look phenomenal on tall women simply because they have the long legs to fill out the long skirt. This doesn't mean that vertically challenged women should shy away from the look, quite the contrary. However, shorter women should look into sandals or high wedges to lift the skirt off the ground. This is more to do with the fact that you don't want to be tripping over or dirtying the fabric of your skirt. For women who wish to look taller than they actually are, maxi skirts are the perfect solution because it will give the illusion of making you look taller because everything beneath the fabric is hidden.

When it comes to choosing a shirt to go with the maxi skirt, you will have to decide what look you are trying to achieve. Generally, you should pick a more form fitting top to contrast the flowing skirt, though this doesn't mean that it needs to show every curve in your upper body. It simply means that you should stay away from tops that are looser than or as loose as the bottom because it will create a very unattractive look. You want your clothing to flatter your body, not hide it. You can even buy a high waist maxi skirt and use waist belt to keep it in place. For the top, go with a crop top. Because the skirt is high on the waist, you will most likely show very little skin, though your body's natural curves will be accented.

For a more casual and comfortable look, wear a plain maxi skirt with a simple tank top. Accent it with a solid scarf. There are so many looks you can achieve with a maxi skirt, whether or its the bohemian look or a sophisticated look, all you need to do is understand how the style of the skirt fits your body and how to contrast the top with the bottom. Too much of a good thing is just as bad as a bad thing, so keep that in mind as you accessorize. Forever21.com and Victoria's Secret are great places to find maxi skirts, as well as a number of other fashion locations.
