How to Wear Madras Pants

By Alan He , last updated October 26, 2011

Madras pants are a staple of the summertime preppy look. Madras is a loud and outrageous colorful plaid material, which of course, is a major part of its appeal. Done right, Madras pants can add a lot of character to an ordinary outfit. However, if worn wrong, they can make you look tacky and ridiculous. This article addresses how you can do the former while avoiding the latter.

As with all pants, it is important to make sure the pants themselves fit properly at the waist and in the legs without being overly slim or overly baggy. Having a proper fit will go a long way in ensuring that you do not looking like a goofy caricature.

What to Pair with Madras Pants

Because Madras pants are so loud and colorful, it’s a good idea to keep your shirt simple to prevent your outfit from going from bold to overwhelming. This means avoiding Madras shirts and other patterns by sticking with solid colors. Oxford cloth button down shirts in simple blue, white, yellow, and pink go well with Madras pants. Just keep the contrast simple. Another item that is often worn and goes well with madras pants is the classic American blue blazer.

Confidence

Lastly, confidence is a crucial factor. It is hard to explain and there isn’t a set formula, but it takes a certain amount of “swagger” to pull off any bold look. If you don’t have the right aura while wearing Madras, i.e. your back is hunched, you look nervous or shifty, etc. it will detract from your outfit and make your sartorial decision goofy instead of bold. A bold pattern requires a bold person behind it!
