How to Wear a Summer Sweater

By Molly Roth , last updated June 10, 2011

Just because it’s summertime does not mean that you need to retire your sweater for the season. While you probably won’t be needing your heavy-duty wool sweaters, save lighter cotton cardigans and pullovers for chilly summer nights. With a little thought, you can create some great summer outfits that feature sweaters you may have otherwise allowed to fall by the wayside.

Cardigans

A little cardigan can go a long way. For the summer, you can find a wide variety of different cardigans that will dress up or even just spruce up a bland outfit. Pair a light cotton cardigan with your tank top and shorts for a more interesting look, or wear a short-sleeved cardigan with a tank top or strapless dress. Wearing a longer, thin cardigan can add dimension to your look while a thin knit button-up can transform your outfit for night into more work-appropriate attire.

Pullovers

There are plenty of pullover sweaters that will see you through the summer time. Try a loose-knit short-sleeved sweaters with a tank top underneath and a cute pair of shorts or Capri pants. Many stores are currently offering short-sleeved sweaters for the summertime. You can also wear these sweaters with a breezy skirt or as a bathing suit cover-up.

The Sweater Vest

Don’t let the stigma of its name fool you – the sweater vest can now be worn in a way that is trendy and cool. Go for cardigan-style vests to wear over your simple outfits to amp them up. It is best to use simple colors and patterns; an understated look can go a long way.

By wearing your sweaters in the summer, you will get more use out of your wardrobe and have a chance to exercise your creativity when dressing. And when the nights get a little chillier, you will be glad you kept them out of storage!
