How to Wear Women's Saddle Shoes

Learning how to wear women's saddle shoes in a stylish way can transform many different outfits in your wardrobe. Commonly called "oxfords," saddle shoes were popular in the 1950s, and typically featured a black and white two-toned design. Though oxfords and saddle shoes were originally designed for men, they have recently gained enormous popularity among women. The following article offers tips for wearing women's saddle shoes in a stylish manner.

Avoid Flared Jeans and Trousers

Because oxfords and saddle shoes are so masculine, it's important to dress them up unless you're aiming for a truly androgynous look. One of the best ways to keep your look from being too masculine is to avoid flared jeans and trousers. Your pants don't have to be tight, but they should fit snugly and fall just above the ankle. These allow the saddle shoes to stand out and look casual and cute. Pants that fit loosely around the ankles and hide your oxfords could look awkward.

Choose Narrow, Pointed Styles

The best saddle shoes for women are those that are narrow and feature a slightly pointed toe. Most oxfords and saddle shoes designed for men feature a square or wide rounded toe. Choosing saddle shoes that hug your feet and have pointed toes is one of the easiest ways to keep your look from being overly masculine. In addition, you can purchase saddle shoes in light, flirty colors, such as cream, pink or yellow. However, black or brown is still a great choice, especially for fall. You can also look for variations of the classic saddle shoe, such as styles that feature a low heel. These are a little sexier and dressed up than the traditional saddle shoe, and will help create the illusion of longer legs.

Hide Your Socks

Unless you're dressing dork-chic, avoid wearing visible socks with your saddle shoes. The only way to wear these shoes stylishly is by keeping your socks hidden. Some women choose to go sockless, but since saddle shoes aren't very breathable, this option isn't the most comfortable. Look for sheer socks made of pantyhose-like material that dip below the ankle and remain invisible. Wearing your saddle shoes with full-length tights or leggings is fine, however. For a super retro look, pair your saddle shoes with fishnet tights.

Get Dressy

One of the cutest ways to wear saddle shoes is with dresses and skirts. If you're wearing a smooth a-line skirt or a snug pencil skirt, be sure to keep your look feminine with a flouncy top. If your dress or skirt is frilly and flowing, pair it with a simpler shirt to keep your look balanced. Try canvas saddle shoes to pair with an easy summer dress, or choose a style in patent leather for a crisp, office-worthy look. Finally, don't forget to accessorize. Layered necklaces and bangles will draw the eyes upward and keep your look fresh. A belt that matches your saddle shoes is perfect for accentuating the waistline of your favorite dress, and a well-tailored blazer that plays off the color of your shoes will pull your look together.
