Writing an effective finance resume will land you a job sooner rather than later. An effective resume will highlight your past experience and education and let a potential employer see how your experience makes you an excellent candidate for the position on offer. When you write a resume, create a different one for each job you are applying for. Your finance resume should specifically address the needs and demands of each position.
Most finance jobs require that you pay attention to details. A resume full of generic statements won't get you very far. Instead, think of specifics for each former or current position you held. For example, always list the number of projects you worked on or focus on one or two projects in particular. Don't write something along the lines of "Performed transactions" or "Researched acquisitions." Those two descriptions don't really explain anything. Instead, specify what transactions you performed and in what industries. Describe the types of acquisitions you researched and what your research guidelines were.
An employer in the finance world wants to hire someone who will accomplish great things at the company. When you create a resume, point at out least one result of a task you completed at each job. For example, you may have performed research and implemented a program that reduced company spending by 10 percent.
Instead of writing an objective at the top of your resume, use that space to summarize and emphasize your achievements and experiences at previous jobs. Most likely, an employer cares more about how you perform than the type of job you are after. Since you only have a short amount of time to grab a potential employer's attention, put all the information he wants to see right at the top.
In some cases, your resume won't be read by a person but scanned by a computer program. The program will look for keywords. If your resume has them, you're more likely to end up in the pile for further review. If it doesn't, you may end up in the discard pile. Use words that are used throughout the finance world, such as mergers, acquisitions, and analyst, rather than words that are too specific to your former positions or industries. Look at the job description for an idea of what keywords to use. Words that appear in the description describing your duties and responsibilities should appear on your resume in the appropriate places.
The appearance of your resume will impact your ability to land the finance job you are after. Make the font size large enough that is comfortable to read. It should be no smaller than 11 pt. Choose a font style wisely. Times New Roman is standard. Unusual fonts such as Comic Sans are best avoided. Even a font such as Courier should be avoided as well, as it looks outdated.
You may wish to use a template to format the resume so that it looks tidy and neat. You want each bullet point and date to be evenly aligned on the resume. Always proofread and spell check your resume before you send it off.
