When most people set out to build a deck, much of the thought and effort goes towards the style and materials that will be incorporated. Many people don’t realize that one of the most important elements of any deck, both functionally and aesthetically, is its railing. Installing the right deck railing will ensure that your deck is both safe and attractive, and can add to the overall quality of your home.
Deck Railing Materials: The first and most important element that must be considered when planning to install deck railing is what materials you wish to use. Deck railings can be made out of a variety of different materials, and they do not necessarily have to match the materials used in the construction of the deck itself. While wood is the most commonly used material is deck railing, it is also somewhat problematic in that it doesn’t stand up to the elements as well as materials such as aluminum and steel. When deciding upon materials, the climate your home is located in should be the most important factor.
Deck Railing Styles: Once you’ve decided upon materials, it is important to determine what deck railing style you would like to emulate. There are a variety of different styles that can be used when planning the railing of your deck, most of which can be constructed out of any type of material you wish to use. Two of the most common deck railing styles are known as Starburst and Chippendale. Starburst railings are made up of a cluster of blasters, which fan out towards the top of the railing, and can be very attractive. Chippendale railings differ in that they utilize an “X” pattern of diagonal balusters. Depending upon the style of your deck, one style of railing may be more applicable than another.
