A rough-in for a gas fireplace can provide a perfect first step in learning the straightforward art of framing. You basically create a rectangle of 2-by-4-inch boards with an opening for the fireplace insert. The insert can sit on top of a platform made of 2-by-10-inch lumber. While can you locate the framing to create a fireplace as an island or room divider or in a corner or alcove, the most straightforward rough-in involves building a bump-out to an existing exterior wall.
