Installing Automatic Outdoor Lights

First, it is important to choose the correct style of lighting to go with your home and landscaping. For security purposes these lights should be placed near doors, windows, garages, walkways, fence openings, patios, and any dark secluded places on your property. Safety installations should be near doorways, walkways, garages, swimming pools, or any other heavily used areas of your property.

The first thing to do when you are ready to install your lighting is to turn the power off. Sometimes installation is as easy as screwing out the old bulb and screwing in the automatic bulb. But more often than not, the old electrical box will be too small for the automatic light. To install the new light fixture, dry fit the mounting bracket to make sure the light will fit securely. Use electric tape to tie off the wires and then screw in wire nuts to secure the wires to the fixture. Make sure the rubber gasket is seated properly and use caulking to water seal the electric box.

Now install the detector away from the light. Some are heat sensitive and can get false readings or even become damaged when placed too close to the light. To set the motion detector be aware that if it is too sensitive, wind or rain or small animals can set it off. Keep adjusting the sensitivity controls until you get it to read properly.
