Landscaping with Colorful Red Shrubs

For those who are serious about their landscaping, choosing shrubs is an important task. The right shrubs can add a great deal of “pop” to the appearance of your yard, leaving your neighbors in jealous envy. While green shrubs are the most common variety, red shrubs can be extremely effective in terms of highlighting your landscape if you know how to use them correctly.

Foundation Planting

Red shrubs are extremely bold, and tend to work best when used as accents. As a result, they are perfect for planting along the foundation of a home. Try staggering red shrubs, planting green varieties in between them. Use the same variety of red shrub along the entire foundation, as different reds can clash and become unattractive relatively quickly. Use dark mulch along your foundation, which will help to bring the red out even more.

Mailbox Mound

When situated on their own, mailboxes can be rather unattractive, and often stick out like sore thumbs. Surrounded with the proper landscaping elements, however, your mailbox can look elegant and attractive. Plant red shrubs and mulch around them, surrounding them with purple, blue and yellow flowers in order to create a colorful accent to what might otherwise be a rather mundane area of your yard. You can also use lawn ornaments to draw attention away from your mailbox if it is plain in design.

Retention Wall

If you’ve got a rather large hill in your yard, one of the best ways to landscape it properly is to install a retention wall. Retention walls can add a great deal of depth to your landscaping, and can be very attractive. When red shrubs and colorful flowers are incorporated, they can make the wall stand out and draw the eye towards the installation. The more colorful shrubs you plant on a retention wall, the better!
