If you have recently moved to the Las Vegas area and want to landscape your front yard, you may not know where to begin. If you have come from the Northeast, you will no doubt be familiar with plants that can grow in that area. However, Nevada is quite different in climate and weather conditions, as it is a desert region.
Keeping in mind the weather conditions in Las Vegas, a cactus is an ideal plant for which to landscape. Prickly pear is common throughout the state of Nevada and blooms lovely flowers during the spring that range from pink to red. If you choose to plant a prickly pear cactus on your front yard for landscaping, however, make sure to place it in a location where passersby and visitors won't be stuck with its prickles. Plant the cactus in a soil that consists of a sand mixture and where it will receive a good deal of full sunlight throughout the day.
The butterfly bush is a wonderful landscaping plant. It blooms gorgeous purple flowers that grow in bunches and can get to heights of between six to eight feet in a short time. The shrub can also become about four to six feet wide, which makes them especially good for ornamemtal purposes. The sweet, pleasant fragrance of the blooms attracts butterflies, which explains the plant's name. These are hardy bushes that will attract a lot of attention from your neighbors and passersby.
Gardenias are exquisitely beautiful and come in a wide variety of different types. Although they may be a little high maintenance when growing them in Las Vegas, they make a great landscaping plant. If you decide to plant it, make sure to select a location that sees a good amount of sunlight during the morning hours but that will offer shade during the afternoon.
