Luxury Leather Wallets for Men

By Anne Davis , last updated September 4, 2011

Leather wallets are a must-have for men who consider themselves to be stylish and modern. Regardless of the style that you prefer, whether billfolds, tri-fold wallets, or large wallets, there are many companies that specialize in producing luxury leather goods for men. Be prepared to spend a little cash, however. Quality leather accessories, including wallets and belts, are often worth premium dollars at the most well-known stores, including Coach and Cole Haan. But before you go to the store to select your wallet, you should know a thing or two about leather and leather qualities so that you know if the money you're spending is worthwhile.

Leather Grain

Most of leather's value and character comes down to one thing: its grain. When discussing leather, "grain" refers not only to a layer of the hide, but also to the nuances of the hide's texture, including subtle qualities to its feel and look. There are several styles of grain that you should look for when you're searching for the best wallet.

Polished Grain

A polished grain is flat and smooth. It's actually polished and burnished on a wheel so that it has a totally refined surface.

Nipped-Up Grain

A nipped-up grain is a grain that is raised slightly. It's seen on most washed leathers. This style of leathers naturally shrinks to a texture that is fine and wrinkled. Because of how its laundered, it's actually washed in a drum with soap and water, this grain typically features much variation, an aesthetic that adds to its authentic patina.

Pebbled Grain

Pebbled grain leathers are easy to identify because they feature a distinctly raised grain with varied dimension. The plump "pebbles" on the leather's surface form when the leather is put into a dry drum. This grain can have a lot of variation, depending on what type of leather is used, which part of the hide is used, and how long it's drummed.

Natural Milled Grain

This lightly-raised grain has a fine, tight structure and a pebble-like pattern with irregular lines, all of which form during the natural milling process.

Natural Grain

Natural grain is organically textured and, thus, it looks untouched. Instead of being tanned and dyed, natural grain isn't processed to achieve creases. It looks just as it did when the tanner obtained the hide.

Embossed Grain

An embossed grain leather has a subtle rise that is obtained from a pattern that is digitally engineered and then embossed onto the milled leather with heat, pressure, and time.

Brands

As stated above, there are a number of companies that sell luxury leather wallets for men. One of the most well-known companies for such wallets is Coach, which features leather wallets in almost any style you can imagine. But these wallets are expensive. They can cost you anywhere from $100 to $300, depending on your tastes. Another popular luxury wallet maker is Louis Vuitton, which makes a variety of leather wallets that can cost you as much as $1000, although less expensive options do exist. Also check Cole Haan, which features quality leather wallets for around $100. For more budget-friendly wallets, check out manufacturers like Fossil and Calvin Klein, which both make leather wallets.
