If you’re looking for an easy craft project to make with kids, consider creating a fleece blanket that needs no sewing. You’ll have a cozy and easy-to-wash item for babies, kids or pets.
Go to the fabric store and purchase two equal lengths of a polyfleece fabric. You’ll need two pieces for this project, and it’s fun if you choose two different fabrics that coordinate yet contrast. Consider one in a solid color and the other in a coordinating pattern. Just make sure both pieces are of the same type and consistency of fleece.
Trim the selvage, or the unfinished edge left from manufacturing, off the pieces of fabric.
Make sure your scissors are sharp. This project involves no sewing but it does entail plenty of cutting!
Lay the two pieces on top of each other. Put the first piece face down and then lay the second piece on top of that face up. Make sure you have the “backs” of the fabric against each other and the “front” side facing out. Make sure the edges are lined up with each other.
Next, cut a five inch square out of each corner. Then line up a yard stick with the cut corner and begin cutting a fringe. This is where the sharpness of your scissors will really matter, as you’ll be cutting plenty. Cut through both pieces of fabric. Make the individual fringe pieces about an inch wide, and then five inches long.
When the fringe is cut, go back and pick up the first “tentacle” of fabric. Keep the two layers of fabric together and tie into one knot, much like tying off the end of a balloon.
Complete this process for all four sides.
You’ll wind up with a warm fuzzy blanket that is held together by a series of knots, with no sewing at all! You can turn the knots around so the contrast fabric shows on the opposite side. Then snuggle at will.
