Make a sports team banner to show support for your professional, amateur, high school or youth team. Making your own banner is a craft project that the whole family can help with and it requires minimal supplies. A professionally designed and custom manufactured sports team banner can be costly and take months for delivery. With a little elbow grease and some inexpensive supplies from your local craft store, you can bring friends and family together to create a custom sports banner that will directly express your style and what you want to say.
Depending on your design and banner size, it can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour to make your own sports team banner. It can also take less time if you have more people helping with this craft project. Each person helping with the project can be put in charge of a specific color to be painted across the banner. By dividing up the painting portion of the large banner space, you can cut your project time in half.
For your own sports banner you will need fabric, fabric paints, paintbrushes, fabric markers, a measuring tape, sewing scissors and stencils. If you want to sew the edge of your banner to give it a more finished look, then you will also need a sewing machine and thread.
An old white sheet or blanket with a flat surface can be transformed into a sports team banner. If you don’t have an old sheet or blanket on hand, you can purchase fabric at your local cloth or craft store. You will want at least six yards of fabric at the widest width available. The more firm the fabric, the easier it will be to hold and display. Vinyl works well for this project and so does a thick cotton or polyester. You will want to use a light colored fabric to make your banner writing legible. If you are using cotton or polyester for you banner, you may want to sew a ½-inch hem around the edges to prevent fraying and give it a more professional look.
You will want to use stencils to give your lettering and symbols a cohesive look. Stencils can be purchased at your local craft or hobby store in various sizes. Keep in mind you will want your lettering to be legible from a distance, and you will want to be able to fit all your words on your banner. Before you purchase your stencils, determine the wording and images you will use on your banner and determine their layout.
Make sure the paints you use on your banner are safe for use on fabric and match the colors of your chosen sports team. Pull your banner fabric tight, and with your fabric markers trace the outline of your stencils onto your banner fabric. Fill the inside of your stenciled letters with the paint color of choice. You now have created your own banner for your sports team.
