Making Basket Liners

By Barry Solomon , last updated March 2, 2011

Basket liners not only make your baskets more attractive, they can unify the look of the diversely styled baskets that you have around the house. Here you will learn how to simply make fabric basket liners.

Begin by measuring your basket's length and width. Since your liner will anchor on the outer edges of the basket, allow about two inches for the outside. Now add an additional three inches to your measurements to allow for a tie and casing. Measure the shorter ends of your basket and add an inch to that measurement.

Next buy a fabric that you select to fit your style. Buy extra fabric in just in case you make a mistake during the process.

Now you can cut the fabric to your measurements. Mark the center of each fabric cut with a pin. Match up the middle of both pieces of fabric and pin them to each other face down. Fold back the edges of the large piece of fabric so that they meet the edges of the end piece. Pin in place to make nice corners.

Now you can sew into place either by hand or with a sewing machine. Go over the stitching again with zigzag stitches. Trim away excess fabric and even out the edges.

Now cut a two and a half-inch incision in the center of one of the long sides of the fabric and sew it with zigzag stitches. Fold the two sides of the incision over into a V and pin down. Make two half inch folds in the upper edges, one on top of the other, to make a casing for the liner. Sew the folds into place.

Where you allowed the three extra inches, cut two one and a half inch ties to hold your liner in place. Make sure you have enough to tie a bow. And now you are ready to place it in the basket.
