Making chocolate dipped spoons is an easy, inexpensive, and thoughtful gift for any occasion. You can give them by the dozen or pair a handful with a bag of specialty coffee or personalized mugs. This sweet treat doesn’t have to be a gift, however. Make a batch for use at your next dinner party or whenever you need a little extra chocolate in your life.
Melt chocolate in a double boiler or microwave. If you don’t have a double boiler, you can put a heat-proof bowl over a pot of boiling water. Stir constantly until chocolate is completely smooth. If using a microwave, melt chocolate on low heat in thirty second blasts, stirring after each and being very careful not to scorch the chocolate. Dip spoons in melted chocolate and place on baking sheets to cool. Dip again until chocolate is the thickness you’d like. Chill completely in the refrigerator, then wrap individually in cellophane bags and tie with decorative ribbon.
Using pre-flavored chocolate (orange, raspberry, and peanut butter are easy to find) is a great option for something different, but you could create your own flavors as well. Add a few tablespoons of your favorite liqueur to melted chocolate or stir in a few tablespoons of fruit preserves. Another great idea is to vary the types of chocolate you dip the same spoon in; for instance, try dipping in milk chocolate, then peanut butter flavored, then milk chocolate again.
For seasonal appeal, try dipping spoons in appropriately colored sprinkles or sanding sugar. You can also drizzle with colored chocolate or use a clean paintbrush to paint on polka dots, stripes, or any design you’d like. For Christmas spoons, try dipping the spoons into crushed candy canes.
