The Peace Lily is more than just a beautiful flower, it has a rich history, and like the name implies, is thought to promote peace and harmony. The Peace Lily includes all plants in the Spathiphyllum genus. Spathiphyllum means “peace and prosperity” in Latin. Peace Lilies are known for their elegant, star-shaped, white flowers and rich, green leaves. They are also recognized for their ability to purify air making them popular plants for offices, desks and homes.
Peace Lilies were first discovered in their natural rainforest habitats in South America, Central America, and Southeast Asia. They were cultivated and bred to form a number of elegant hybrids including Mauna Loa, Sensation, and Flower Power. Today, almost all Peace Lilies owned by Americans are hybrids. Peace Lilies are extremely common in the workplace, and in 2007, they were voted “desk plant of the year.”
Although Peace Lilies are not part of the true lily family, they are named lilies because of the similar flowers of the two plant species. Like white lilies, they are associated with peace, purity, and innocence after death. They are used in arrangements at weddings, funerals, and anniversaries where their beauty and aroma contribute to the ambiance.
Christians view white lilies as symbolic of the Virgin Mary. They are also associated with the Easter holiday and Christ’s resurrection, because they appear to die in the winter, but are reborn again in the spring.
As part of new age spiritually, Peace Lilies are thought to harmonize conflicts and heal negative places, people and relationships. They are thought to protect individuals and cleanse the air of harmful toxins and radiation from electronics such as televisions and microwaves. Feng Shui practitioners also use them to help balance energy in a room.
Peace Lilies are often given as houseplants to friends or co-workers. Often, they are planted beside other plants, but they are also beautiful as stand-alone plants. Peace Lilies are very hardy and require little maintenance. With proper watering and care, a Peace Lily will bring you years of enjoyment and peace.
