Memorial Day Style Guide

By Shannon C , last updated December 22, 2011

This Memorial Day, spend the holiday in style whether you are staying put or on the road. For most, Memorial Day festivities are fun, casual, and featuring get-togethers with close family and friends, while never forgetting that the reason for the day is to honor veterans and active duty military personnel who have sacrificed so much so that we can enjoy the freedom of spending quality time with our loved ones. Combining a red, white, and blue base with up-to-the-minute style trends can pave the way to enjoying the day as well as fashionable memories all year long. Learn from fashion experts how to dress and accessorize for the occasion this Memorial Day holiday.

Dress for the Activity

If you are off to a fun and casual picnic, be sure to dress for comfort as well as style. Incorporating natural, breathable, eco-friendly fabrics in patriotic color schemes can give you the freedom to join in an impromptu game of frisbee or volleyball while still following the spring fashion trends. Layer for beachside or poolside events, packing a swimsuit, cover-up, flip-flops, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a ball cap or sun hat, then layer on a flirty patterned sundress and bring some cool and casual sandals for after the water activities are over.

Travel Light and Bright

Spring has arrived, and Memorial Day marks the first day when it is fashionably acceptable to wear white. So travel light and bright, showing off that newly emerging tan with bright whites from your feet to the top of your head. For a traveling weekend, bring just the bare essentials and mix and match. A floppy foldable hat in deep denim or striking red, a pair of flirty sandals or slingbacks, some white denim slip-on tennis shoes, jean shorts, a button down linen or oxford shirt, a travel-friendly sundress for day and evening, a long scarf, and some fun accessories round out the travel list.

Remember the Flag

Choose flag wear with respect, but there is a lot of it out there, from hats to shirts to accessories to shoes. For a casual look, pick one stars-and-stripes accessory or wearable and pair it with simple red, white, or blue attire.

Don't Forget Your Hat

Depending on the planned festivities, hatwear can be casual or more elegant chic, from Derby-inspired broad-brimmed hats to straw or cowboy hats, or even ball caps.

It's Time for the Mani and Pedi

With the onset of spring, it is time to bare those tootsies. Make sure your feet are sandal-ready by scheduling a pedicure and manicure in advance of the Memorial Day holiday. Choose a fun pattern just for the occasion, or simply paint nails and toenails a vibrant red to go with any outfit when the day arrives.

Accessorize for the Occasion

Incorporate the latest spring style trends by adding a pair of metallic flats or sandals, a pair of cool chic aviator shades, and, if pool-side activities are planned, a new spring bikini.

Don't Forget Safety

Memorial Day can be a day of fun in the sun, but ultraviolet rays can still harm skin, so don't forget to pack the sunscreen!
