Modern Floral Arrangement Ideas

Flowers can brighten up any room, and here are some modern floral arrangement ideas to fit a contemporary home. Modern floral arrangements integrate the clean lines of contemporary design with the timeless appeal of flowers. Bold geometric shapes are a trend in modern arrangements; think triangles, rectangles and perfect circles when positioning your flowers. Containers play a bigger part in the overall arrangement than they once did. They should be carefully chosen to highlight the shapes and colors of the flowers, or even used in unusual ways. Invest in two or three floral frogs of different sizes to make your flower arranging easier. A frog sits at the bottom of the vase and holds the flowers where you want them, giving you the flexibility to create interesting geometric lines with just a few stems.

Even a bouquet of the most “old fashioned” garden flowers can look modern when combined with the right greenery and placed in a container with clean lines. Choose a short, wide vase made of clear glass and line the inside of it with large leaves like flax, bamboo or dracaena. You can buy leaves like these at your florist, or go outside into your own garden and see what’s available. Leaves from cannas, bird of paradise, elephant ears, hostas, or philodendrons will also work. Wrap a few leaves around the inside of the vase horizontally to show off their texture and place the flowers inside.

For an arrangement with just a few flowers, place a frog in the bottom of a tall, cylindrical vase. Cut three tall-stemmed flowers, such as gerbera daisies, at different heights and secure them in the frog. Experiment with the flowers before cutting the stems. You can nestle all three inside the vase, or have just one bursting out from the top while the other two stay inside. Use a handful of stones or glass marbles to cover the frog and fill the vase with water. You can completely submerge the plants in water for a dramatic look, but the arrangement won’t last long. To get more life from it, only put a few inches of water in the vase and refresh it daily if needed.
