For woman who has an appreciation for highly designed art, a pair of Alexis Bittar earrings is a must. The winner of the 2010 Accessory Designer of the Year Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America, Bittar began his entrepreneurial career as a teenager selling antique jewelry and vintage clothing on the streets of Soho. A denizen of the New York club scene in the 1980's, Bittar developed his love for underground fashion, style and music at places like Danceteria and Area. He created a line of Lucite jewelry and began selling it on the street where he was discovered by Dawn Bello, Fashion Director for Bergdorf Goodman, who took him to retail. The following year he went to a trade show for the first time and was discovered by Saks and began a long and lucrative relationship with the high end specialty retailer. He designed Burberry's first ready to wear jewelry collection and went on to create exhibits for the Museum of Modern Art and the other Cooper Hewitt Museum. This led to overseas sales to Harrod's in London and Isetan in Japan. In 2002, he collaborated with noted stylist and costume designer, Patricia Fields, and he created the jewelry look for the women of "Sex in the City". Both Joan Collins and Lauren Hutton have been the faces of his line and he most recently created the Lucite masks worn by pop icon Lady Gaga. He is the jewelry designer of choice for first lady Michelle Obama. Bittan has opened three boutiques in New York and one each in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago.
For the most popular earring selections we can look to his three current collections: Night Magic, Sweet Spring, and Wild Animal. Night Magic has four selections. The Duchamp Told Hoop Earring is inspired by the French artist of the same name. It features organic shapes and textures and is hand painted. The beautiful Crystal Encrusted Rhodium Light Blue Hydroqz Drop Earring gives the illusion of craters on the moon's surface. It is encrusted with Swarovski crystals and has light blue and off white hydro quartz stones resembling celestial pools in the night sky. The Crystal Encrusted Gold Extra Small Hoop Earring offers clean, modern crescent shapes with liquid metal textures sprinkled with Swarovski crystals. The dripping metal effect gives them an '80's feel. And the last of the most popular earrings from the Night Magic Collection is the Crystal Encrusted Rhodium Extra Small Hoop Earrings which are the same as the gold but in a different metal.
Sweet Spring offers two styles with various interpretations. The Flora Gold Double Petal Earring harkens back to a 1950's level of sophistication and femininity. Each petal is hand carved and hand painted. Faceted crystal clusters give the illusion of glistening morning dew on a freshly plucked flower. The Rose Dust Large Hoop Earrings offer trendy soft pink and grey crystals embedded in hand carved Lucite that evokes the essence of romance.
The Wild Animal collection features more color and has four popular choices. The Zanzibar Gold Pav Dome Clip Earring has that "Out of Africa" feeling to it. It is hand painted with molten gold hardware. The Crystal Encrusted Gold Small Moonstone Teardrop Earring features Swarovski crystals with off white and light blue hydro quartz stones. This same design is repeated in Rhodium. Another popular choice from this collection is the Zanzibar Gold Leopard Hoop Earring featuring hand painted leopard and monarch pieces with molten gold hardware. And finally the Liquid Gold Extra Small Hoop Earring has influences from both the decadent '80's and the minimalist '90's.
