By Shannon Allen , last updated January 29, 2012

Nails for Spring in 2012 are all about minimalism and simplicity. In stark contrast to the loud and oddball colors that have be dominating the nail polish world, this spring brings clean, crisp and more natural colors back into the spotlight along with pops of more lovely and feminine colors. Let your nails transform you this season by following the beautiful trends for nail color this spring.

Barely There Neutrals

Soft and almost transparent shades of neutral nails are by far the biggest trend on the runway for nail color this spring. Following a season of bright and flashy colors, this spring feels extra clean and natural with shades of creamy grays and beiges, pale pinks and dainty French manicures. Shades such as OPI's Samoan Sand, Giorgio Armani's Creamy Beige, and Phillip Lim's Transparent Pink usher in a season that all about being refreshed and rejuvenated. In addition to traditional neutral shades, an entirely new definition of neutral colors are being introduced this spring including milky whites, sweet honey tones, and seashell pinks and yellows. While neutrals may seem simple, perfection is essential when wearing these shades. Neutral nails require strict upkeep to really succeed so make sure those chips and scuffs are taken care of quickly. Another tip for wearing neutral shades on your nails is to keep the shape looking more rounded. You hands will appear to look more elegant and elongated with the rounded shape.

Feminine and Lovely

Women have been growing increasingly bold and brazen in their expressions of individuality over the past many years. This season, however, is all about femininity and bringing back the soft and sensual colors of womanhood. Models were looking especially lovely on the 2012 Spring runways as they flaunted pops of pretty and more feminine colors. These colors include classic reds, deep burgundies, chic pastels and even some nice mellow yellows. Check out Chanel who is looking particularly lovely this spring with a Rose Pink shade. Christian Dior also delights us with a fresh and vibrant Cherry Red. Another favorite comes from Karen Walker, who makes vintage look entirely fresh and new again with a beautiful Chartreuse shade. Designers are making these shades even more successful this spring by incorporating their nail shades into the model's makeup. Both Jason Wu and Christian Dior matched their lovely nails colors to their model's lips during their spring shows and many designers are also using eye makeup to bring out hues of the nail color, creating a more polished look.

Fancy Designs

While the majority of nail trends for Spring 2012 favor a more natural and minimalist look, manicurists are still proving themselves as artists and gracing us with some very intricate and beautiful designs for the season. Ruffian combines a yellow half moon manicure with plum hockey stripes for bright and stunning nail this spring. Another great design comes from Nicole Miller who has some fun with geometry to create a pink and blue checkerboard spring manicure. One of the most loved tips of the season are the beautiful black swan graffiti nails created at Wayne. These gorgeous nails apply simple yet intricate black strokes to the very tips of a white nail, creating a modern yet sophisticated look.
