Necessary Equipment for a Volleyball Beginner

By Dawn Marcotte , last updated December 7, 2011

An athlete new to the game of volleyball will need to get some basic supplies before learning the game. Necessary equipment for a volleyball beginner will include shoes, safety equipment, clothing and of course a volleyball. Equipment varies widely in price and the athlete may want to purchase a few items at a time to ensure the best quality.

Safety Equipment

One of the first items needed is safety equipment. This includes kneepads to help protect the knees when the athlete dives for a ball and lands on their knees. Athletes may also need ankle braces or wrist braces if these joints are not strong enough for the game yet. Finger braces can also be used to help support finger joints that get used extensively during practice and games. These safety devices come in a wide variety of styles and it is important to find what is comfortable to wear during games and practices.

Shoes

Volleyball shoes differ from other athletic shoes in the soles and the weight of the shoe. Indoor volleyball is usually played on a wood gym floor and the soles of volleyball shoes are made of gum rubber that grips this type of floor extremely well. This allows athletes to stop, turn and cut quickly and accurately. Some manufacturers use a different material for the soles that mimics the grip of gum rubber. Volleyball shoes are also lighter than other types of athletic shoes. The shoe is often made of mesh and synthetic leather. It is important to choose a shoe that fits the athletes’ foot well. This may not be the most expensive shoe, though generally more expensive shoes are better quality.

Clothing

Volleyball is an active sport so the right clothing is important for comfort. A T-shirt and shorts will do to begin, but a cotton t-shirt will absorb sweat and may rub against skin causing a sore spot. Clothing that is made of a material that wicks away moisture will prevent this problem. Some athletes prefer tight clothing such as spandex shorts, while others like loose clothing. This is simply personal preference and the beginner should wear whatever they are most comfortable in when playing and practicing.

Volleyballs

There are a wide variety of volleyballs available for athletes of all skills. When choosing the right volleyball consider whether it will be used inside or outside. Balls for outdoors are stitched which makes them more durable and a bit heavier. Volleyballs can be made from leather or synthetic materials, but leather tends to be of higher quality. Leather also tends to be harder than other materials. Some players prefer a harder ball, but this is a personal preference. As with many items the higher the price, the better the quality. There are volleyballs that are lighter for use by beginners so they can train without fear of getting hit too hard by the ball. All balls come in a wide variety of colors so anyone can choose their favorite.

Beginner volleyball players can get a few basic supplies and be ready to play the game.
