Oils that Promote Hair Growth

If you are suffering from thinning hair or desperately want it to grow out again after a botched haircut, you can speed up the process by using the right essential oils to promote hair growth. They will also add shine, clean the scalp and provide a beautiful, natural luster. Browse the guide below to pick one or two oils that will best help you.

Carrier Oils

Essential oils are extremely potent and should never be used directly on the skin or hair. Use a carrier oil like almond, soybean or sesame and mix it with the essential oil to create a gentle cocktail that you can apply directly to the area. 2 to 3 drops should be mixed with 1-teaspoon carrier oil. When judging how much oil to use during a massage, mix 15 drops of the essential oil with 1 ounce of your carrier oil. When massaging, be sure to massage in circular motions for about 15 minutes. All of these treatments are not instant; it will take time, perhaps a month, to see the full effects.

Essential Oils

Jojoba Oil

This oil can be used with any skin and hair type and is excellent for damaged hair. If you are losing hair because of breakage, this oil is the best choice. Apply the oil to your hair after you have towel dried it. Leave it in for 30 minutes or more and then rinse out.

Burdock Oil

This is a great oil to encourage hair growth from the scalp outwards. It stimulates blood flow to the hair follicles, encouraging them to grow and providing them with more nutrients than are normally available. If you have hair loss problems because of stress or the natural aging process, burdock oil is an excellent choice.

Rosemary Oil

This is used more than any other oil to promote hair growth. It is perfect for thinning hair and works by stimulating blood flow to the scalp. It also adds luster and strengthens the hair. It will enhance any natural highlights that you have.

Tea Tree Oil

For a great all-encompassing treatment, pick tea tree oil. This oil moisturizes the hair, reduces the production of oil on the scalp (no more greasy hair look) and prevents dandruff. It fights bacteria, fungus and viruses. Your hair becomes thicker and the general health of your scalp improves. If you have a problem with dandruff, try mixing a few drops of the oil with some olive oil and use once a week.

Basil and Peppermint Oil

Both of these oils are great for stimulating blood flow and encouraging the follicles to take root. If you have oily hair, basil is the better choice; for dry hair, go with peppermint oil. Each encourages the growth of its respective hair type better than the other. If you have thin hair, these oils will have your hair back to its regular thickness in no time. You might feel a slight tingling sensation with these oils.

Citrus Oil

If you have oily hair, try applying grapefruit or lemon oil regularly to condition and clean the scalp. Lemon oil is known for its regenerative properties and is full of vitamins A, B and C. Apply it to the hair and leave in for at least 30 minutes before gently washing it out. It can be either hot or cold when applied.

Lavender Oil

This is a blockbuster oil that can be used if you have Alopecia (a hair loss condition) to restore hair growth. It not only promotes hair growth, but also increases the rate at which wounds heal. Massage the oil into the scalp each day, combining with other oils as you need to for the best results.

Olive Oil

This is best for dry hair and is normally combined with another essential oil that has a pleasant smell. After just a few treatments the hair is noticeable moisturized and has better elasticity. As with the others, apply to towel dried hair and leave on for at least 30 minutes.

Bay Oil

For dull hair that lacks shine, try using bay oil to restore luster. Mix it with rosemary for a powerful hair conditioner. Mix 6 drops of bay and rosemary oil to 4 ounces of warm carrier oil and massage into the scalp. Add 3 drops of bay oil to your normal shampoo. After 20 minutes wash out the oil with the infused shampoo. This will also help with dandruff.

Within a few weeks of treatment you will be enjoying increased hair growth, thickness and shine.
