Our Favorite Styles of Kids Outerwear for Winter 2011

By Shannon Allen , last updated November 6, 2011

Keep your kids dressed fashionably warm by choosing some of our favorite styles of kids outerwear for winter in 2011. The temperatures keep dropping as winter approaches and it is officially time to check your kid's wardrobe to make sure they are ready.  Winter is all about layers with sweaters, jackets, hats and all the accessories.

Girls

Similar to women's fashions, girls this winter will look great and stay warm with layers of clothes offering texture and pops of color. For example, The Pumpkin Patch has some darling pink striped tunic tops that look chic and warm under their mock leather biker jacket and paired with some dark skinny jeans and riding boots.

Another trend this winter is knit sweaters. The textured, chunky knit sweater jackets or cardigans look cute and cozy and many popular styles embellish the sweater with buttons or a fur trim on the hood. Gap kids has a super cute sweater coat with a faux fur collar or match your daughter's rosy winter cheeks with the long chunky hooded cardigan at the Pumpkin Patch.

When the weather is extra cold, nothing beats the warmth of a good puffy coat or pea coat. Puffy coats this year are available in animal prints and brighter colors. In addition, most of these coats come with darling faux fur lined hoods.   For those occasions that require a little nicer dress, the tailored look of a wool pea coat or trench coat will always be classic and in fashion.

Boys

Fashion trends for boys tend to vary less from year to year however there are definitely some looks this year you don't want to miss.  Stripes are especially in this year in a variety of styles.  Long-sleeves, sweater and hoodies are all sporting different types of stripes that will let your son look cool and warm this winter. Gap kids has some great sweaters and hoodies featuring stripes this year. Their Rugby striped mock Henley and Sherpa-lined stripe hoodies are two of our favorites.

Another popular look we love this fall for boys is plaid. Plaid prints are usually associated with rough and rugged mountain men but this look is definitely working well for the city folk too.  Check out Old Navy's performance fleece Sherpa-lined jackets which come in two shades of plaid to keep your son fashionably warm all winter. Another great plaid look for boys can be found at Gap. Their flannel shirt jacket has a toasty Sherpa lining that looks and works great no matter where your boys go.

Hats

Hats and beanies are very cute and popular this year for both boys and girls. Traditional and visor beanies both help keep heat from escaping and really can add a lot of personality to an outfit.  Big knit beanies are really a darling look for girls and often feature a little knit flower or jewel for extra pizzazz.  For boys, military caps are super studly this winter. Check out The Pumpkin Patch, Gap Kids and Old Navy for great examples of the looks we love.
