Patio Lighting Ideas

No patio is complete without sufficient lighting that suits your taste and style. You may love your patio already, but showing it off during the day is not enough. When you have friends over for a summer barbecue or just to relax and get together, your patio will get plenty of use. However, you can maximize the time you get to enjoy your patio with proper lighting, and you will come to love it even more. But what are the best ways to accomplish this patio lighting project?

There are many ways you can light up your patio. It is essentially up to you to decide the best way and what you want to accentuate. Start with the basics. Lighting up your patio’s boundaries can be simple if you know where to begin. You can use normal LED light strings strung along the outer fences of your patio. But maybe you want something more refined or your patio area is too large to be lit simply by string lighting.

If you have a pathway that you wish your guests to follow, you can set up light posts or small solar-powered lamps along the path. Since people tend to follow the light, this will keep them from stepping on your flower beds or tripping over something else in the dark.

If you have a Mediterranean-style patio, you may want to accentuate the cracked walls. Try wall lamps to show these features off. You can also use wall lamps for columns or virtually any pattern that you want to brighten up and call attention to after dark.

There are lights and lamps for many landscapes so if you have a tree such as a willow, and you want it to be illuminated from beneath its long wavy branches, you can install a light to shine upwards at the tree. This will create a magical and romantic atmosphere.

You can install embedded lights into virtually anything: A wall, stairs, or your deck. This type of lighting is good because it is out of the way, leaving you more room to do things with your patio while at the same time adding ambiance.

In addition to all of these ideas, if you decide you are going to have a party, you may want to consider torches, which will contribute to the mood of the party. Torches, however, may not be practical for every day use because they are not always safe for unattended use. For parties, you may also want to consider string lights with decorative shades that will create a colorful, fun atmosphere.

Finally, if you have an indoor patio that leads to your outdoor one, you may seriously want to consider outdoor lighting. It will add depth to your indoor patio because you will not have the reflection of your indoor lights on the windows. Instead, you will be able to look right outside. This is just one of the many options you might consider for an indoor patio.
