Pattern for a Bean Bag Chair

By Barry Solomon , last updated March 9, 2011

Bean bag chairs add a touch of fun and whimsy to any room, and with the right pattern you can even make your own. Contrary to their name, they are not filled with beans but with polystyrene pellets. This creates a very lightweight and easily shaped piece of furniture that can be moved around the room even by a child. They are relatively easy to make and the finished product will provide a fun furniture alternative for your home.

You will need to purchase your fabric for the chair. Get five yards by forty-eight inches for an adult size and three yards by forty-eight inches for a child. Buy muslin lining of the same dimensions and get and get six cubic feet of polystyrene pellets for and adult and four for a child.

For the pattern, start with gridded pattern paper. Now draw the sides of the chairs, 41.5 inches long and 21 inches wide for an adult and 24 inches long by 16 inches wide for a child. For the top piece pattern, fold a piece of the pattern paper in half and, using a ruler and pencil, draw an arc 5.5 inches from the center point for an adult chair and 4.5 inches for a child's chair. Keep one end of the ruler on the starting point and pivot it around with the pencil to make the arc. For the bottom of the bean bag chair, fold the paper in half and create an arc just like you did for the top, 12 inches for the adult chair and 10 inches for the child's version. Cut out the smaller interior circle and the outer piece becomes your pattern for the bottom of the bean bag chair.

Now you are ready to cut your fabric using the patterns you created so that you can proceed to finish your new bean bat chair.
