Popular Cocktail Party Appetizers

By Joseph Guibert , last updated February 4, 2011

Appetizers are a popular choice for cocktail parties because they are easy to eat and leave your guests' second hand free for their drinks. Looking for a fabulous nosh to serve at your upcoming soiree? When it comes to cocktail party appetizers, bite sized is best. The last thing you want is your guests to have to juggle their drinks and food while trying to mingle at the same time—bad for your party flow and possibly equally as bad for your carpet. Try these simple amuse bouche-type of appetizers for some delicious morsels that will keep your guests circulating and coming back for more.

Prosciutto-Wrapped Asparagus

Wrapp a portion of fresh asparagus in thin prosciutto slices with a layer of a soft cheese in between, such as Boursin.

Gazpacho Shots

Refreshing and great for summer evening parties, try serving up a cold gazpacho soup in shot glasses for your guests. Not only is this mouthful size easier to handle, but it’s also an innovative conversation starter.

Mini Bagels and Lox

Miniaturize this New York classic, using mini-bagels as substitutes. Top them with a traditional cream cheese and slice of smoked salmon. For the more complex palate, try adding capers to the mix.

Spanish Bocadillos

Try toasting slices of baguette with olive oil. Once toasted, dry rub the slices with a clove of garlic and then a roma tomato. Top off the tasty toasts with a slice of chorizo and a slice of your favorite hard cheese.

Cheese Platter

Speaking of cheese, always a classic choice, offer your guests a new take on this traditional spread using more exotic or artisanal cheeses. Providing two soft and two hard cheese options is always a safe bet. Try an aged manchego and gouda for the hard and brie and camembert for your soft.

Yet whatever the dish itself, the key remains portability. Keeping your appetizers to no more than two or three bites will keep your tasteful tasty cocktail party on trend!
