Popular Lawn Mowers Made in the USA

Finding popular lawn mowers made in the USA can be a difficult task. While it's true that products made in the USA carry that label, finding them at your local lawn and garden center is not always guaranteed. And finding one that's the quality you demand can be even trickier. Here are a few popular lawn mowers made in the USA to help guide your buying decision.

Walk Behind Mowers

Your choices here are gas powered and electric. A number of manufacturers in the USA build mowers, but two stand out. These are Craftsman and MTD Yard Machines.

Craftsman, a division of Sears, has a long history of offering quality tools for homeowners. It has two 21-inch mowers, the 38917 (retails for $230) and 38918 (retails for $250), and both are highly rated. Both are rear-bagging, mulching mowers that can also have a side discharge feature. Both have ergonomically shaped handles. Both have washout ports, which are great when it comes time to clean the mower as there's no tipping or worries about gas spills. The main difference is the wheels: the 38918 has high rear wheels that make pushing the mower when the bag is full easier.

The MTD Yard Machine 11A-B16M is a solid, basic mower that retails for about $200. It does not have a side discharge, but it mulches and has a rear bag. Don't worry that there's no side discharge feature. A side bag gets in the way of fences and landscaping, and if you discharge grass clippings to the side, you'll just have to rake them later. It has a 21-inch cutting swath.

As far as electric mowers are concerned, consider the Toro 20360. It sells for about $400 and has a battery that lasts about 50 minutes and takes 16 hours to recharge. Electric mowers are always best for smaller lawns. The nice thing about the Toro is that it's cordless, so you don't have to worry about cutting a cord. It has a 20-inch cutting swath.

Riding Mowers

When it comes to popular riding lawn mowers made in the USA, consider John Deere. The X304 has a 42-inch cutting swath. It's not a zero-turn mower, but is stable on hills. It retails for about $3,600. The Z225 is a zero-turn mower and also has a 42-inch cutting swath. The zero-turn feature means you'll cut flat areas much faster. It retails for about $3,000.
