Popular Open Shoulder Shirts

The open shoulder trend has been on the rise in popularity for a few years now, ever since first lady Michelle Obama rocked a stunning one-shouldered gown at the Inaugural Ball in January 2009. This trend allows wearers to show a little skin while still looking graceful and sophisticated. The good news is, now that open-shouldered styles are so popular, it is easier than ever to find open shoulder shirts at almost all of your favorite stores, in countless styles and at any price range!

One-Shouldered Top

A very popular way to wear this trend is with a one-shouldered top. These shirts have a single sleeve for one shoulder, while the other shoulder is bare. You can choose from one-shouldered shirts with a full-length sleeve, short sleeve, or tank top strap. Other variations include material and embellishment; if you are looking for a dressier one-shoulder top, pick one made of a silky, drapey material and pair it with a pencil skirt or dark jeans and heels. A ruffled, cotton one-shoulder top can look casual and cute when paired with shorts or jeans.

Off-the-Shoulder Top

Another popular way to show off a shoulder (or two) is with an off-the-shoulder top. Reminiscent of 70’s-style blouses, these shirts feature sleeves that rest on the upper arm, leaving the shoulders bare and showcasing the wearer’s collarbone.

Cut-Outs

Another alternative is a shirt with shoulder cut-outs that create a peek-a-boo effect for your shoulders, offering a bit more coverage than the other styles.

Lastly, you can “accidentaly” bare a shoulder by wearing a loose shirt and letting it casually drape off of one shoulder. Now that you know all your options for showing off your shoulders, go shopping and find your personal favorite open shoulder top!
