In most cases, the Crepe Myrtle is grown to resemble a medium-sized shrub and can produce white, purple and pink flowers. These trees are also known for being fairly self-sufficient, although you will need to fertilize them from time to time. Also, you should always try to plant Crepe Myrtles in fairly moist soil. Otherwise, you will need to water the trees regularly, especially during periods of intense heat. Alternatively, you can also use a layer of fresh mulch to keep the soil moist and avoid excessive evaporation. As with most other trees and shrubs, you'll want to ensure that the Crepe Myrtle receives plenty of direct sunlight each day.

Fertilizing

In many cases, a bit of fertilization will go a long way when it comes to caring for your Crepe Myrtle trees. If done properly, the fertilizer should allow your Crepe Myrtles to grow at an accelerated rate and produce a large amount of healthy blooms. When shopping for Crepe Myrtle fertilizer, the brand is not as important as the actual contents of the package.

On each package, you should see three numbers which indicate the consistency of the fertilizer. For the Crepe Myrtle, you should choose a granular all-purpose fertilizer with an analysis such as an 8-8-8 or 10-10-10 ratio. Then, spread roughly a half pound of the fertilizer per half-inch of the trunk’s diameter around the root system of the tree sometime in the spring. You may also do a light fertilization following the same process in early August if you wish to further accelerate the growth of your Crepe Myrtle.
