Prom Dress Trends for 2012

By Danny Wong , last updated January 12, 2012

It's never too early to start thinking about your next prom, and which dress you'll be wearing to that special event. For Prom 2012, bold colors will be the popular trend. Though the colors are similar to those popular in 2011, what sets 2012 dresses apart is the style. Now that Prom 2011 is over, look out for which dress trends will be hot for 2012.

Long, sleek dresses will be in style for prom in 2012. Poufy, fairytale princesses dresses are no longer the trend; long dresses that flair out just slightly or go straight to the floor are what to wear for the next prom season. Some of these sleek dresses feature halters and deep V-necks. This deep V-neck look has been worn by celebrities lately, and can make the young women wearing the dress look older and more sophisticated. For those who would rather bare their shoulders, strapless dresses with sweetheart necklines are also a popular look. Like last year, in 2012 it will be a trend to show some skin, even in a long prom dress. Some dresses feature a slit that goes up to mid-thigh. Other dresses have cut-outs on the sides or back. Those who are looking for a more wholesome dress should not worry, because simple, plain, yet elegant floor-length gowns are in style, too. Another trend is the one-shoulder dress, adorned with rosettes at the waist or on the shoulder. Long, one-shoulder dresses are sophisticated and reminiscent of Greek goddesses. These goddess-like dresses are especially gorgeous in teal and turquoise hues. Short dresses will be a great option, too. Like the longer dresses, one-shoulder and sweetheart styles will be popular among short dresses. These short dresses may be more versatile for young women, as the can be worn to other events. Also, stay away from short dresses with full skirts and instead opt for a short, sleek look.

A combination of a great style and the right color are what make a dress. Bold colors are a trend for prom 2012. Gorgeous dresses in bright purples, electric turquoise, or pretty raspberry are popular choices. Stark white is another prom trend, and looks great against tanned skin. Fun, floral patterns are also popular, especially for the silk, floor-length straight gowns that will be the go-to trend for prom 2012. Ombre patterns will also be a trend in 2012. Gradual color fading in and out of the fabric is an interesting look and allows you to pair colors together when you accessorize. Along with bold colors, bold accessories will be a hit in 2012. Look for beading and embellishments that make a prom gown stand out. Some designers or stores may offer belts to wear with gowns so that you can customize the dress and give it your own unique look. Though sleek dresses and bold colors are in style, keep in mind your own personal style, too. Among the trends are looks that can work for anyone, and you'll always look great if you are happy with the dress you have chosen.
