Recipe for Peach Cobbler

By Ted Rollins , last updated February 4, 2011

Baking peach cobler from this recipe is easy and delicious. The word “cobbler” describes a fruit dessert composed of a fruit filling poured into a baking dish and covered with a thick, doughy top. In the American South, the peach cobbler is one of the most common varieties, as the peach is one of the region’s fruit staples. Traditionally, this rich dessert is made even richer with a scoop or two of ice cream placed atop the cobbler immediately prior to serving. The primary determining factor for the quality of your peach cobbler will be the peaches themselves, so make sure you only use the freshest and sweetest peaches.

Ingredients

  • 8 fresh peaches
  • 1/4 cup of white sugar
  • 1/4 cup of brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons of cornstarch
  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup of white sugar
  • 1/4 cup of brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 6 tablespoons of room-temperature unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup of boiling water
  • 3 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 teaspoons of ground cinnamon

Directions

  • Preheat your oven to 425 F and peel, pit and slice your peaches into thin strips.
  • Using a large bowl, mix your peaches, white and brown sugars, 1 cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and cornstarch.
  • Pour your peach mixture into a large baking dish and bake it for 10 minutes.
  • While the peach mixture cooks, combine flour, your other white and brown sugars, baking powder, and salt. Then blend in your butter. Add enough water that it combines but still remains slightly grainy.
  • Toss together your white sugar and ground cinnamon.
  • Take the peaches out of the over and cover them with the topping. Then spread your white sugar and cinnamon mixture on top.
  • Bake for about 30 minutes or until the top of the cobbler becomes golden brown, serve, and enjoy the fruits of your labor!
