Recommended Bathroom Color Schemes

Your bathroom is likely to be one of the smallest but most crucial rooms in your house, and that is why it is important to find the perfect color scheme for it. It's one of the first places you go in the morning, and one of the last places you go at night. Having a soothing color scheme in this small room can help you feel more relaxed and at ease throughout the day. This article will help you choose colors to complement your bathroom, and help you avoid common mistakes in bathroom décor.

A Word About Planning

Before you choose any color scheme, look closely at the colors that are already contained in your bathroom. If your bathroom has green fixtures, or yellow tile, your paint choices should revolve around those existing colors. You won't be able to distract your eye from these deep colors, so it is best to work with them and harmonize. If your fixtures, countertops, tile and flooring are all neutrals, then your options are more forgiving.

In general, your bathroom should contain only two to three colors, including the color of the shower curtains and towels you're planning to use. Since your palette is so limited here, the primary paint color is incredibly important.

Yellow and Orange

These bright colors can give you a cheerful kick in the morning, and work especially well in rooms with abundant natural light. Choose primary, citrus colors over sandy blends.

If your bathroom is very small or has low natural light, choose lighter colors within this spectrum. Dark colors can make the room look smaller.

Pastel Blue or Teal

These soothing, sea-like colors can help you create a cool oasis to retreat to. If your fixtures and flooring are creamy white colors, this blue will help offset the clinical feeling of the room. Augment this color choice with seashells in white jars and shell-printed towels and rugs.

Sage or Light Green

This organic color may contrast with taupe and beige colors you may have in other parts of your home. This paint scheme may also help you pull in any avocado green bathroom fixtures you may have in your bathroom. Again, keep the color light here to avoid a claustrophobic, cave-like feeling.

Cream and White

For a more traditional bathroom, keep the walls a creamy taupe or white. Make sure your color choice doesn't conflict with the color of your bathroom fixtures or flooring. Add a punch of color with chocolate brown rugs and towels, and complete the look with bouquets of dried flowers and twigs.

Turquoise

For brave homeowners with blue bathroom fixtures from the 1970s, choose a light turquoise paint color to accent your antiques. Complement your blue with tan rugs and towels, and keep the shower curtain a neutral white or beige.

Paint Type

No matter what color you choose, remember to purchase paint that is suitable for use in your bathroom. The high humidity and high heat of a bathroom can wreak havoc on standard paint. It pays to spend a little extra on the proper paint foundation, as you don't want to redo your handiwork every year.
