Renting Versus Buying Golf Equipment

By Sheridan Tano , last updated November 12, 2011

Are you wondering which is better, renting or buying golf equipment? It all depends on your needs. Are you a beginner, or a more experienced player? Are you looking to play for fun every once in a while, or do you want to play regularly to improve your game? The pros and cons of renting versus buying golf equipment very much depend on what you want to get out of the game.

Renting Golf Equipment

It’s a good idea to rent golf equipment when you’re first starting out. This way, you can try different clubs and see what works best for you. The last thing you want is to spend lots of money on clubs before you know what you need, or worse, before you know whether or not you enjoy the game.

Renting golf equipment may also be beneficial if you’re an occasional, casual player and don’t want to worry about storing golf clubs you’ll only use a few days a year. Renting is also convenient if you play golf when you travel, so you don’t have to worry about lugging clubs through the airport.

Keep in mind, however, that no matter what sport you’re playing, you won’t be on your best game if you have to spend half your time adjusting to new equipment. So if you’re just starting out, don’t let the frustrations of rented equipment push you away.

Buying Golf Equipment

Owning your own equipment and knowing its feel is very important if you’re planning on playing golf often and want to improve your game. This way you can look for equipment that works best for you, rather than just dealing with whatever rental equipment is available.

The biggest disadvantage to buying golf equipment is the cost. There are, however, ways to save on golf clubs. If you’re a beginner, you can buy a beginner’s half set, which usually includes 4, 6 and 8 irons, a pitching wedge, a sand iron, 3 and 5 woods, and a putter. This will let you practice with the same clubs without investing too much money in a set of golf equipment. You can always buy more clubs later. You can also save money by buying used golf clubs.
