Shopping for a Home Smoke Eater

By Joseph Boyle , last updated March 22, 2011

If you are shopping for a smoke eater for your home, it is important to know what kind of smoke you want to get rid of, as this will affect what kind of smoke eater you need.  Not all smoke eaters are created equal. A smoke eater is an air pollution remedy meant for use in indoor residential or industrial settings.  Perhaps the most common reason people want to purchase a smoke eater is because of cigarette smoke, either they themselves are a smoker or someone else in their home is.  But there are many other reasons to buy a smoke eater as well.

Elements of Smoke

There are three elements that combine to create smoke: a particle component (such as ash), a gas component (such as carbon monoxide), and an odor component.  All three join together to form what we experience as smoke.  When endeavoring to buy a smoke eater, you should determine whether you are concerned about all three, and if not, then which of the three you are trying to eliminate.  There are different solutions for each problem.

How a Smoke Eater Works

The way a smoke eater works is by combating the small particulate weight components of smoke using either carbon or chemicals.  In order for a given smoke eater to be effective in eliminating smoke, there must be a sufficient amount of carbon (or other chemical eliminator) present.  There are many smoke eaters on the market that do a fairly effective job of eliminating odors, but that fail to remove the gas component of smoke.  In general the reason for this failure is because they are not using enough carbon.  In order for a smoke eater to be maximally efficient, the use of a pre-filter and a HEPA filter should be employed.  The pre-filter will deal with larger particulates, while the HEPA filter will prevent carbon and other particulates from being released back into the room once they have been captured.

Choose the Best Model for Your Needs

There are a number of factors that can influence what sort of smoke eater is best for your needs, including: what sort of budget you are working with, the square footage of the area you are trying to remove smoke from, and your overall intended usage (i.e. whether you will be employing the use of your smoke eater on a constant basis, or whether it will only be used occasionally).

Prevention is Always Best

The best way to rid your household of smoke, its odors, and its health risks is prevention.  If this is a big concern to you, simply allow smoking only outside of your home.  This way you avoid getting that difficult-to-remove smoke smell from invading your walls and furniture, along with the problems that come with it.  If, for whatever reason, this is not a possibility, a smoke eater is your next best bet.

The main thing that experts recommend when you are in the market for a smoke eater is to determine your needs as specifically as possible, in this way you can ensure that you get the most appropriate smoke eater for your home.
