Shopping for a Platform Bird Feeder

By Barry Finnegan , last updated December 21, 2011

The great thing about a platform bird feeder is its size. It is typically larger than other bird feeders and therefore can hold more food. Not only can it hold more food but it can also hold more types of food, which is essential if you want to be able to attract a wider variety of birds to your yard or garden. To this end the bigger the bird feeder is the more types of birds you will see. Since a platform bird feeder is flat it will not only attract perching birds but also bigger birds that usually find their food on the ground.

There are some essential things to keep in mind as you shop for your platform bird feeder. Make sure the feeder you buy has some sort of drainage system and a covering. This is important to keep the bird food dry so it doesn't go bad. You will also want a platform that can be covered with some sort of wire to keep other rodents from eating all of the food.

Platform bird feeders can be purchased online as well as being found at your local home improvement stores such as Lowe's. They are relatively inexpensive especially for simple designs with just the platform that hangs from it's for corners. Some fancier designs cast a bit more like the fly thru platform bird feeder. The fly thru resembles a bird house with it's large roof which acts as a ramada, leaving the bird feeder open and exposed while at the same time providing important covering that will shelter the food from the rain and help to keep it dry. The upfront cost of a fly through might be a good way to go as it could save you money on bird food in the long run especially if you live in a wet climate.
